According to experts, by 2050 every 5th human will be 60 years of age or older; the number of children and employable adults will decrease and there will be 1.5 times more women than men. This is the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) prognosis. Ukrainian statistics show that there are 11 million Ukrainian citizens over the age of 65; nearly a quarter of Ukraine’s population is geriatric and one in 6 of them lives alone.
“The challenges ahead of us require changes to our system of education, our labour laws, social security and health care. We also must give special consideration to families because the number of elderly will soon exceed the number of those under the age of 5,” stated Nuzhat Ehsan, UNFPA Representative for Ukraine.
