“My name is Dima and I am 37 years old. I started using IV street drugs (called ‘shyrka’ on the streets) at the age of 16. I was imprisoned for the first time at the age of 19 but kept using drugs. Because of my lifestyle I wanted to die by the age of 30.

In 2003 I learned that I was infected with HIV. After receiving this information my addiction worsened. As a result everyone started keeping their distance, nobody needed me.

About a year ago a friend of mine gave me the number to Caritas; I figured I had nothing to lose. I called them; they listened, understood and started to help me. I felt needed again. Little by little I worked at kicking my drug habit because I had a reason to live.
